Rhema From The Word, John Hamar

I was saved around the age of 16 at the First Christian Church in Casper Wyoming. At age 18, I joined the United States Air Force, from which I retired 20 years later. During my time in the military I attended chapel. I also read through the Bible at least a dozen times during that time. I retired on October 7, 1998. I started school at Devry Institute of Technology in March of 1999. During this time I met a brother in Christ who was involved in a Bible-study group on campus. He introduced me to the local church in Irving. I lived in the dormitories across from the meeting hall so I started to attend the meetings. We also had Bible studies at Devry. During one of these Bible studies we went over Romans 1:3-4.

Romans 1:3-4 says, “Concerning His Son, who came out of the seed of David according to the flesh, who was designated the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness out of the resurrection of the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.” In the past, I had always been puzzled by this scripture. Christ in his divinity was already God's Son so how come in resurrection He was declared to be the Son of God? In footnote 41 of the Recovery Version of the New Testament Witness Lee says, “By resurrection His human nature was sanctified, uplifted, and transformed. Hence by resurrection He was designated the Son of God with His humanity (Acts 13:33; Hebrews 1:5).” As I read this, it was like a light switched on inside me. If Christ's humanity could be brought into God's divinity, then my humanity could be brought into God's divinity in life and nature but not in the Godhead (Romans 8:29-30; John 1:12; 2 Peter 1:4). Wow! This revolutionized my life. I am not an adopted son by God's grace! Through Christ's death and resurrection, I am a son of God (1 Peter 1:3)! Through this Bible study I gained a greater appreciation of what Christ went through: incarnation (John 1:1,14), human living, crucifixion and resurrection. Knowing this has made God nearer and dearer to me in my daily walk with Him.
